A method for monitoring or detecting a prostate condition in a subject comprises determining Engrailed-2 (EN2) gene, Paired Box 2 (PAX2) gene, and/orβdefensin-1 (DEFB1) gene expression levels in a biological sample from the subject. The expression levels of EN2, PAX2 and/or DEFB1 gene are correlated with cancerous, pre-cancerous, or non-cancerous prostate conditions.
