A self-energizing fluid flow detection system includes a fluid conduit and a thermoelectric generator with at least a first and second side. The first side of the thermoelectric generator is in contact with the fluid conduit. The thermoelectric generator is operable to harvest electric power in response to a temperature differential between the first side of the thermoelectric generator and the second side of the thermoelectric generator. A transmitter is operable to use the harvested energy to transmit a signal indicating a fluid flow in the conduit if a value representative of the harvested exceeds a predefined threshold. The flow is detected and the signal is transmitted using only energy harvested by the thermoelectric generator.
