The invention relates to a method for managing a drive assist system and a brake assist system of an automobile, said drive assist system comprising a cruise control system (RVVi) suitable for controlling the speed of an automobile, and said brake assist system comprising an automatic braking system (FARC) which is activated in the event of a risk of the vehicle colliding with an obstacle located in the path thereof, said method being characterised in that it consists of: i) preventing the activation of the cruise control system (RVVi) or deactivating same when the vehicle no longer meets at least one predetermined dynamic criterion of the vehicle in the presence of the obstacle; ii) simultaneously generating (ARC) a warning for the driver; and iii) activating the automatic braking system (FARC) at an intensity (11, 12) that depends on the imminence of the collision with the obstacle, in the absence of driver intervention on the vehicle dynamics once the warning has been generated (ARC) and in the absence of a reaction or in the event of an insufficient reaction by the driver to avoid a collision.
