A determination unit (7) is arranged to detect whether a tray (4) is filled with empty bottles (3). An extraction unit (8) is arranged to extract the empty bottles from tray. A sorting unit (13) is arranged to sort the empty bottles based on the bottle characteristic determined by a bottle characteristic recognition unit (9). The sorted empty bottles are transferred to corresponding collecting stations (10,15). An independent claim is included for reverse vending machine.
