The device (20) has a pressurized hot water supplying unit connected to a drilling head (21) that sends hot water toward ice. The drilling head includes nozzles (15, 16) arranged at equal distance with one other close to periphery of the drilling head in a same plane. The jet of the hot water coming from the supplying unit is released from each nozzle with an axis oriented parallel to a longitudinal axis of the drilling head. Each nozzle is connected to pressurized hot water supply tubes (5, 6). Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for partially emptying a pocket of water under a glacier (2) a method for piercing a hole in a thick layer of ice.
