The friction drive arrangement is for a train or cable-car operating on steep gradients. It may use a double-flanged wheel (1) pressed down on a rail (5) with a tapered top edge (4). The inside surfaces of the flanges (3) are in frictional contact with the sides (4) of the tapered top portion of the rail. The width of the contact faces is kept to less than 20% of the dia. of the wheel to keep speed mismatch and scrubbing effects to a min. An alternative version of this drive system uses cylindrical rollers geared together with their axes at an acute angle. The top of the rail (5) enters the wedge-shaped space between the two rollers.
