Provided is a silicon nitride powder for siliconitride fluorescent materials having a higher luminance which are usable in vacuum fluorescent displays (VFDs), field emission displays (FEDs), plasma display panels (PDPs), cathode ray tubes (CRTs), light-emitting diodes (LEDs), etc. Also provided are an Sr3Al3Si13O2N21 fluorescent material and a ß-Sialon fluorescent material both formed from the powder and processes for producing these fluorescent materials. This silicon nitride powder for siliconitride fluorescent materials is a powder of crystalline silicon nitride for use as a raw material for producing a siliconitride fluorescent material containing silicon, nitrogen, and oxygen elements, and is characterized by having an average particle diameter of 1.0-12 µm and an oxygen content of 0.2-0.9 wt.%.
