PURPOSE: A device and a method for cooling an engine are provided to reduce energy consumption by efficiently operating multiple cooling water pumps which supply cooling water to an engine. CONSTITUTION: A device for cooling an engine comprises an intermediate coolant cooling circuit, coolers(13,23), a cooling water circuit, and a controller(35). An intermediate coolant for cooling an engine is circulated in the intermediate coolant cooling circuit. The coolers cool the intermediate coolant heated from the engine. The cooling water circuit has multiple cooling water pumps for supplying cooling water to the coolers. The controller controls the operation of the cooling water pumps based on the load information of the engine and the temperature information of the cooling water.
