LOCAL OPTIMIZATION OF ELECTRODE CURRENT DENSITIES Abstract An end effector assembly for use with a bipolar forceps (10) includes a pair of 5 opposing first and second jaw members (110, 120) at least one of which being movable relative to the other to grasp tissue therebetween. Each jaw member (110, 120) includes a pair of spaced apart, electrically conductive tissue sealing surfaces( 112, 122). Each tissue sealing surface (112, 122) is adapted to connect to a source of electrosurgical energy to conduct electrosurgical energy (500) through tissue held therebetween to effect a tissue io seal. The forceps (10) also includes an insulator (113, 123) disposed between each pair of electrically conductive sealing surfaces (112, 122) and an electrically conductive cutting element (127) disposed within each insulator (113, 123) and defining a geometrical configuration including a plurality of peaks (131) having a period (T) that is a multiple of an operating frequency of the electrosurgical energy (500). The cutting elements (127A, is 127B) are adapted to connect to the source of electrosurgical energy to conduct electrosurgical energy (500) through tissue held therebetween to effect a tissue cut. |
