A surface light emitting device is provided to uniformly emit light by increasing brightness at corner portions of a waveguide plate of the light emitting device. A surface light emitting device applies light from a point light source on an incident surface(103a) of a waveguide plate and emits the light from an exit face. The incident surface includes first to fourth planes. First and second planes(301,302) are normal to opposing surfaces of the waveguide plate and normal to two side surfaces of the waveguide plate. The third and fourth planes are normal to front and rear surfaces of the waveguide plate and not normal to the side surface of the waveguide plate. The third and fourth planes are joined with the first and second planes, respectively. The first, third, and fourth planes form a trapezoidal shape, which is convex toward the point light source, with the first plane as arranged as an upper side. The second, third, and fourth planes form a trapezoidal shape, which is concave toward the point light source, with the second plane arranged as the upper side.
