<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compound needle for a flat knitting machine which facilitates a positioning when an opening and closing body and a substrate are connected, and in which large force is hardly applied to a coupling part. <P>SOLUTION: A compound needle is provided in which a coupling part 16 of blades 13, 14 which consist of an opening and closing body 12 of a slider 11 and a substrate 15 is provided with a coupling groove 15b that is formed corresponding to the lengths of upper stages 13e, 14e on a side surface of the substrate 15. Upper stages 13e, 14e are fitted in the coupling groove 15b. Rear ends of connection parts 13d, 14d are brought into contact with an abutment surface 15c. Thus positioning in the longitudinal direction is performed. Since rear parts of the blades 13, 14 are separated into the upper stages 13e, 14e and lower stages 13c, 14c, the length in the longitudinal direction can be reduced. The force required to perform positioning in the cross direction is easy to apply from below. The force which the front parts of blades 13, 14 receive from a bottom surface of a slider groove 17d or the like is also absorbed by the lower stages 13c, 14c being deformed.
