The supply unit (1) comprises a store (4) containing several piles (2) of wrapping material and a transfer device (5) for withdrawing the piles in succession from a fixed withdrawal station (6) and supplying them to a release station (7) positioned next to the wrapping machine (3). The store comprises a carousel (8) mounted around a central rotation shaft (9) and several compartments for containing the wrapping material are uniformly distributed around the shaft using at least two rings. A primary actuator rotates the carousel and axially aligns the compartments to the withdrawal station. An operating device moves the aligned compartments in an axial direction parallel to the rotation axis for radially aligning the compartments in succession to the withdrawal station. The transfer device comprises a gripper (17) for moving the pile from a compartment and a second actuator (18) for moving the gripper between the withdrawal station positioned next to the carousel and the release station positioned next to the wrapping machine.
