The jaws of rock crushers, cement-grinding machinery, and other articles made of austenitic manganese steel, i.e. steel containing from 12 to 20 per cent of manganese, are reinforced or built up by the fusion deposition thereon from a welding electrode or rod of a layer of austenitic nickel-chromium steel containing 7-11 per cent of nickel and 15-20 per cent of chromium, and also, if desired, up to 0,5 per cent of tungsten or molybdenum, so as to obtain articles with hard surfaces and tough foundations. The layer is stated to harden on the surface when subjected to abrasive stresses, which thus increases the resistance to wear. The layer may be 3/16 of an inch thick or thicker layers may be applied by two runs of the electrode. The electrode may consist of a core of nickel-chromium steel containing 6-10 per cent of nickel, 15-30 per cent of chromium and if desired 0,5-2 per cent of tungsten or molybdenum. |
