PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform alteration check in case of scanning a document to which a storage destination has been applied to manage the document.

SOLUTION: In this document management system, an image forming apparatus is provided with: reading means for reading a paper document to which meta data including document identification information have been applied; and distribution means for distributing the image data of the read paper document to a document management device. The document management device is provided with: extraction means for extracting the meta data from the image data received from the image forming apparatus; character recognition means for performing character recognition to the same area as the designation area of a template shown by the document identification information included in the extracted meta data in the image data; collation means for collating the document data of the image data in which the character recognition has been performed with the document data in the same area as the designation area in document data shown by the document identification information included in the meta data; and image storage means for storing the image data in association with the meta data by including the collation result in the extracted meta data.
