The method involves activating an assistance function of a driver assistance system by an object recognition device (3.1), where the object recognition device is provided with a control unit (3.2). A momentary vehicle position (P) and/or a direction of travel (R) of a vehicle (2) is determined by a recognized object. A detected release event is timely validated before the activation of the assistance function in dependence of the momentary vehicle position and/or the direction of travel of the vehicle. The detected release event is validated by using an event list. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating a driver assistance system of a vehicle.
