Compacting chamber 20 has inlet 23; lid 32 resiliently biased to close bin 30 mouth 31 but openable upon inversion. Ideally the lid is hinged 33 at the bins centre, the opening due to gravity acting on the centre of mass remote from the hinge axis. Preferably a lock on the lid disengages upon tilting of the bin. The chamber 20 inlet 23 could be selectively closed by a cover 34. The waste could be compacted by a spring loaded 27 hammer. A partition 14 between the chamber and the bin could include an aperture 15 selectively closed by a door.
