Provided is an inorganic electroluminescent element that can be made to emit light by applying a direct-current voltage to an inorganic luminophor substance, and in which the color of the light emitted can be changed appropriately by changing the luminescent centers dispersed in the luminophor layer or the type of luminophor. The disclosed inorganic electroluminescent element is prepared so as to have a structure in which: an NPN structure is formed inside the direct-current-driven luminescent element by using semiconductor materials; a luminophor substance is vapor-deposited adjacent to the NPN structure; and the luminophor substance and the NPN structure are sandwiched between a first electrode and a second electrode. In the disclosed light emitting method: by employing the aforementioned structure, a forward voltage is applied to the PN junction on the cathode side, and electrons are injected into the P-type semiconductor layer; by applying a reverse bias to the PN junction that consists of the P-type semiconductor layer and an acceleration layer made of an N-type semiconductor, a depletion layer is formed inside the acceleration layer; and by employing the electric field in the depletion layer, the electrons are accelerated and are made to collide with the luminescent centers or the luminophor particles, to achieve light emission.
|
