<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problems that the power loss increases at the time of switching an operation of a switching element, which causes the increase of heat generation amount, and that a leakage current flows into a floating capacitance of a load by the switching operation, which causes generation of conduction noise. <P>SOLUTION: A power conversion apparatus has a switching element that adjusts an output of an AC power, and a controller that controls an operation of the switching element. In a first control method, a pulse width is modulated using a carrier wave that varies at a constant frequency, and a control signal is outputted. In a second control method, the control signal is outputted based on a phase of the AC power to be outputted. The controller outputs the control signal using any of the first control method and the second control method depending on an operational state of the load.
