A lab-on-a-chip (LOC) device to separate pathogens from a biological sample for analysis, the LOC device having a supporting substrate, an inlet for receiving the sample including pathogens and other constituents larger than the pathogens, a dialysis section for separating the pathogens into a portion of the sample, and, a microsystems technology (MST) layer for separately analyzing the pathogens, wherein, the inlet, the dialysis section and the MST layer are all supported on the supporting substrate.
