<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compound which takes on a hue with high brightness suitable for inkjet recording and ensures a variety of high fastness of a recorded material and excellent storage stability of an ink composition when used to prepare the ink composition, and an ink composition including the compound. <P>SOLUTION: The compound is a water-soluble azo compound represented by formula (1) or a salt thereof, wherein m and n represent an integer of 1 or the like; R<SP POS="POST">1</SP>represents benzoyl having sulfo, or the like; R<SP POS="POST">2</SP>represents 1-8C alkyl or the like; R<SP POS="POST">3</SP>represents hydroxy or the like; R<SP POS="POST">4</SP>represents H or the like; R<SP POS="POST">5</SP>to R<SP POS="POST">7</SP>represents H, 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy having sulfo, or the like; and group A represents a substituent having a benzothiazole ring.
