<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for a variable valve system that changes the opening/closing timing of an engine valve while preventing the occurrence of hesitation when an exhaust purification catalyst has not warmed up and an engine is still cold, thereby reducing unburnt fuel to be exhausted from an internal combustion engine, as well as preventing hesitation. <P>SOLUTION: An electronic control device 100 as a control device for a variable valve system performs cold control for changing the opening/closing timing of an exhaust valve 41 before an exhaust purification catalyst 45 is warmed up to an activation temperature. The electronic control device 100 restricts a change of the opening/closing timing through the cold control when fuel is not likely to be atomized, eases the restriction and performs cold control for controlling the opening/closing timing according to a value detected by an air-fuel ratio sensor 67 when a sensor element of the air-fuel ratio sensor 67 is activated, an air-fuel ratio of a mixture gas provided for combustion can be estimated based on the value detected by the air-fuel ratio sensor 67. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
