<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of accurately determining at optimum timing that a toner transfer mechanism is in contact with an intermediate transfer belt with normal pressure, securely obtaining expected image quality, and preventing a situation in which image quality nonuniformity occurs in individual image forming apparatuses. <P>SOLUTION: A multifunction machine 1 comprises a developing unit 2M and so on, an intermediate transfer belt 10, a transfer roller 9, a movement mechanism 100 for moving the intermediate transfer belt 10; a density sensor 18; a control section 111 for causing a toner pattern to be formed on the intermediate transfer belt 10; a determination part 112 for determining that a pressing condition between the developing unit 2M, and so on, and the intermediate transfer belt 10 is normal if a toner pattern density reaches a predetermined density value after the toner pattern is transferred to the intermediate transfer belt 10; and a timing designation reception part 113 for receiving a time designation instruction of an execution timing of a pressing condition determination operation.
