<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thickening agent which substantially suppresses undissolved lumps of xanthane gum generated when adding to food and drink containing fluid, such as water, green tea, juice, soft drink, isotonic drink, soup, miso soup, milk or concentrated liquid diet, and has viscosity development which can simply give predetermined viscosity to target food and drink by a small amount of addition, to provide the thickening agent which substantially suppresses undissolved lumps especially when the content of xanthane gum is increased, or xanthane gum is stirred in a weak condition, such as hand stirring. <P>SOLUTION: One or more vehicles selected from dextrin, starch and sugar is added to a first granule which is granulated using powered xanthane gum as a thickening agent as at least one of raw materials, whose bulk specific gravity is 0.45 g/ml or less.
