The method involves supplying workpiece (3) to molten bath (14) in weld zone (17) so that the workpiece is partially vaporized. The emission spectrum of excited vapor (16) is observed and analyzed to determine concentration of molten bath component in the vapor. The composition of molten bath is changed according to the determined concentration of molten bath component in the vapor. An independent claim is included for fusion welding device.
