<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a maintenance device which can attain space-saving eliminating the need for a space such as a waste liquid route for idly discharged ink, and to provide an image forming apparatus using the same. <P>SOLUTION: The maintenance device 5 which has a movable blade unit 11 which wipes a nozzle face 2 of a recording head 1, and a cleaning unit 36 which removes liquid droplets 13 adhered to the blade unit 11 includes a cleaning moving unit 41 which moves the cleaning unit 36 to a first position touchable with the blade unit 11 and to a second position corresponding to the nozzle face 2, and a control unit 42 which controls the action of the cleaning moving unit 41. At the time of idle discharge when the liquid droplets 13 not related to recording are discharged from the nozzle face 2, the cleaning unit 36 is located on the second position by controlling the action of the cleaning moving unit 41 by the control unit 42.
