<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a nonaqueous electrolyte battery which is excellent in safety against abnormal overheating and highly reliable against an internal short circuit and a short circuit due to dendrite, and suppressed deterioration in high temperature storage characteristics. <P>SOLUTION: A nonaqueous electrolyte battery is composed of a positive electrode, a negative electrode, a separator and a nonaqueous electrolyte. The separator includes a layer including at least one kind selected from cellulose and cellulose derivatives and a layer mainly including an insulating inorganic material. Air permeability of the separator shown by a Gurley value is 100 to 500 seconds, and a maximum hole diameter of the separator measured by a bubble point method is 0.01 to 1 μm.
