The vehicle has an onboard network (1) operated on a low voltage level. A low voltage battery (2) is attached to the network by a switch (7) for supplying the low voltage level to the network. A direct current (DC) static converter (4) converts the high voltage level to the low voltage level such that a high voltage battery (3) is attached to the network via the DC static converter. The low voltage battery is formed as a single battery that provides the low voltage level directly to the car. The low voltage battery is directly connected with a low voltage load (5) i.e. starter. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a motor vehicle.
