The method involves activating a speed control unit to maintain speed of a motor car (1) to predetermined desired speed, and performing traction control function for detecting a slip of wheels (5) of the car. The speed control unit is automatically deactivated if the slip of wheels is detected. The speed control unit is automatically deactivated depending on the car speed at which the slip of wheels is detected. The speed control unit is automatically deactivated if the slip of wheels is determined and the car speed lies within a first speed range and not within a second speed range. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for operating a motor car comprising a speed control block (2) a computer program product comprising a program code to be executed on a data processing unit for operating a motor car.
