PURPOSE: A separator and a lithium ion secondary battery are provided to prevent the heat from being diffused to parts adjacent to a separator since the heat generated from the inside of a battery is dissipated to the plane direction of the separator. CONSTITUTION: In a separator(1), the thermal resistance of a plane direction is smaller than the thermal resistance of a thickness direction. The separator has a central part(2) and a surface part(3) having a void ratio bigger than the central part. The void ratio of the surface part is 90% or greater. The central part has a core part and an outer circumference having a void ratio bigger than the central part. An inorganic material is included in the central part or core part.
