Disclosed is a method of preparing near terminal ethylenically unsaturated carbonyl compounds, which method comprises subjecting a carbonyl compound comprising an acyclic ethylenically unsaturated group to a cross-metathesis reaction with substantially pure 2-butene having impurities in an amount no greater than 0.1 mol percent, relative to 2- butene.
