PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vacuum cleaner capable of cleaning by moving a suction nozzle forward/backward while suppressing the moving operation of the suction nozzle by a user to the minimum.SOLUTION: An operating body for moving the suction nozzle is telescopically formed, including a first operating member connected to an operating part and a second operating member fitted to the first operating member in such a way as slidable in the axial direction. The operating body has a telescopic state detecting means 21 for detecting the most extended state and the most contracted state of the operating body. A drive device having a rotatable driving wheel and a motor 44 for self-propelled travelling which can rotate forward/backward for rotationally driving the driving wheel is mounted in the suction nozzle 31 which has a suction opening and which is moved by the operation of the operating part connected with the operating body. The direction of rotation of the motor 44 for self-propelled travelling is reversed by a driving wheel control part 51 based on the detection of the extended state or contracted state by the telescopic state detecting means 21.
