PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a contrast ratio in a liquid crystal display device including a liquid crystal layer filled with blue phase liquid crystal.SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device includes: a first polarizing plate 14 and a second polarizing plate 15; a first substrate 12 disposed between the first polarizing plate 14 and the second polarizing plate 15; a second substrate 13 disposed between the first polarizing plate 14 and the second polarizing plate 15 to be closer to the second polarizing plate 15 side than the first substrate 12; a liquid crystal layer 29 disposed between the first substrate 12 and the second substrate 13 and filled with the blue phase liquid crystal; and a first electrode and a second electrode to apply voltage to the liquid crystal layer. The liquid crystal layer 29 exhibits optical rotation when no voltage is applied, and an angle α of optical rotation in a no-voltage application period of the liquid crystal layer 29 satisfies 0°<|α|≤15°.
