PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a linear recording type magnetic tape device in which servo tracking performance for dimension change in the width direction of a magnetic tape can be improved largely. SOLUTION: During data recording, data to be recorded on the magnetic tape is divided into main data and auxiliary data, the main data is recorded onto a main data track among a plurality of data tracks and the auxiliary data is recorded onto an auxiliary data track among the plurality of data tracks. During data reproduction, error rates of data read in all head elements are calculated, when the error rate is lower than the prescribed value, the main data and the auxiliary data are read by all head elements, when the error rate is higher than the prescribed value, the main data or the auxiliary data is read by an arbitrary head element out of a plurality of head elements.
