The disclosed method for detecting a target base sequence containing a polymorphic base comprises: a step (a) wherein at least one type of detection primer, at least one type of competitive primer, and at least one type of common primer are added to a nucleic acid sample containing a target nucleic acid comprising a base sequence including a target base sequence; a step (b) wherein the detection primer and competitive primer are competitively annealed to the target nucleic acid to produce extension product (A); a step (c) wherein extension product (A) obtained in the previous step (b) or in the following step (d) is annealed to the common primer to produce extension product (B); a step (d) wherein extension product (B) obtained in the previous step (c) is annealed to the detection primer or the competitive primer to produce extension product (A); and a step (e) wherein extension product (A) or extension product (B) is detected.
