<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an image forming apparatus that can maintain toner image detection accuracy even in the configuration where a detecting member is disposed opposite the outer periphery of an endless belt portion pressed by a tension application member. <P>SOLUTION: A tension applying roll 40 moves according to environmental changes, such as humidity and room temperature and change in printing modes (color printing and monochrome printing). As the tension application roll 40 moves, a rotary shaft 40A also moves. When the rotary shaft 40A is moved in an arcuate form in the direction of arrow D, a support member 72 whose groove 82 is fitted on the rotary shaft 40A is moved downward while moving and rotating along a long hole 84C against the pressing force of a compression coil spring 86. Consequently, the distance between the detecting member 70 and the outer peripheral surface of the intermediate transfer belt 32 becomes equal to a predetermined distance.
