<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive photoelectric conversion element and a photoelectrochemical cell having high conversion efficiency and furthermore excelling in durability. <P>SOLUTION: The photoelectric conversion element has pigments with a structure expressed by a formula (1). In formula (1), A is an atomic group necessary for forming a ring with carbon-nitrogen bond and one of Y<SP>1</SP>or Y<SP>2</SP>is an acid group. In this case, when both are acid groups, they can be the same or different from each other. When only one is the acid group, the other is an electron-attracting group. D is pigment residue and bonds with A forming the ring formed along with the carbon-nitrogen bond by single bond or double bond through a linking group.
