PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gate type gear shift lever device that can suppress a bumping noise at a time of a gear shift operation and automatically remove an adhesion of wax on a buffer member. SOLUTION: A gear shift lever supporting part 2 is arranged with a buffer member 4 containing wax and having a second gate hole 7 which has a shape corresponding to a first gate hole 3b and through which a gear shift lever 5 is inserted. The gear shift lever supporting part 2 is also arranged with, between an upper housing 3 and the buffer member 4, a slide cover 6 having an oval hole 11b through which the gear shift lever 5 is inserted, and moving correspondingly to a shift operation of the gear shift lever 5. A bush 8 slidably contacting with an outer circumferential face 5b of the gear shift lever 5 according to a change of a prominent length T of the gear shift lever 5 is fitted to the oval hole 11b of the slide cover 6.
