PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the amount of liquid consumed in detecting a droplet discharge state for recovery. SOLUTION: For a normal nozzle, a driving waveform of a voltage Va higher than a reference potential Ve is applied to a piezoelectric member 112. For an abnormal nozzle, a vibration area 102a is kept in the initial state by applying the driving waveform of the reference voltage Ve to the piezoelectric member 112. For the normal nozzle, the piezoelectric member 112 extends to push the vibration area 102a into a liquid chamber 106 side. The flow resistance of the liquid chamber 106 communicated with the normal nozzle is made larger than the flow resistance of the liquid chamber 106 communicated with the abnormal nozzle.
