摘要 766,341. Travelling-wave tubes. TELEFUNKEN GES., [formerly TELEFUNKEN GES. FœR DRAHTLOSE TELEGRAPHIC]. March 9, 1953 [March 8, 1952], No. 6396/53. Class 39(1). [Also in Group XL(b)] The helix 1, Fig. 2, of a travelling-wave tube is coupled to an external transmission line 11, 12 or waveguide 31, Fig. 4, by an impedance transformer comprising a first metal member 6 and the helix lead 13, Fig. 2, or by a first metal member 6 and a second metal member 23, Fig. 4, the helix passing through an aperture in the first metal member so that the end turn or 2-3 end turns of the helix is or are surrounded by the aperture. In one form, Fig. 2, the input end of the helix passes through a cup-shaped metal member 6 and lead 13 extends parallel to the surface of disc 5 to form an impedance transformer, and is connected via sealed in contact 9 to the inner conductor 11 of a coaxial input line. The outer cylindrical part of cup 6 is n#/4 (n is any odd number) to obtain a high frequency short circuit to casing 7. The output end may be similarly constructed. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown) the device has input and output coaxial line sections coaxial with the tube and both enclosed within the tube envelope. The inner conductors form the gun and collector electrodes, and coaxial connections in the form of discs or tubes are sealed through the envelope. The helix is mechanically supported by a glass tube or ceramic rods. In a modification the glass tube forms part of the envelope the ends being sealed to the inner conductors of the coaxial line sections. The helix may be coupled to waveguides instead of to coaxial lines. In one such form, Fig. 4, coupling is provided by two cupshaped metal members 24, 27 which serve as impedance transformers. The helix is connected to disc 23, and the guide is of the 'capacitively loaded' type. Exact impedance matching can be obtained by capacitive or inductive shutters or short circuiting sliders in the guide. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown) the gun, helix and collector are each surrounded over their entire length by a separate metal cylinder with a dine portion or portions forming continuations of the guide walls. The ends of the helix are connected to the two end discs, and a coil focusses the beam. The spaces between the metal cylinders are sealed by glass rings, and the ends of the tube by glass plates. The guides have sections turned by pistons for impedance matching disturbances due to increased capacity owing to the glass wall of the tube functioning as a dielectric are avoided by the provision of one or more annular ledges on one or both of the coupling members inside the tube, Figs. 6, 7 (not shown) which gives a compensatory increase in inductance. One of the coupling members may form part of the tube wall. The guide may have an extension formed as a wave trap to prevent escape of high frequency energy.
