PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a holding and sealing material for a catalytic converter whose surface pressure is less likely to be deteriorated by aging.

SOLUTION: The holding and sealing material 4 for a catalytic converter, which is constituted of ceramic fibers 6 collected in a mat-like shape, is disposed in a gap between a catalyst support 2 and a metallic shell 3 covering the outer periphery of the catalyst support 2. The ceramic fibers are partially bound to one another with a ceramic adhesive 7.
