Additive containing N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide for urea-based fertilizer

Disclosed is a dry flowable additive for fertilizer comprising: a. N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide (NBPT) in the range of about 1 to 80 wt. percent, and b. Solid urea-formaldehyde polymer (UFP) in the range of about 99 to 20 wt. percent wherein the UFP is a polymethyl urea resin, and wherein the additive, when combined with the fertilizer provides reduced nitrogen loss from the soil. The additive can be mixed with dicyandiamide (DCD) in the following amounts a. NBPT in the range of about 0.40 to 15.0 wt. percent; b. DCD in the range of about 40 to 95 wt. percent; c. Silicon dioxide in the range of about 0 to wt. 3 percent; and d. Solid UFP in the range of about 3 to 15 wt. percent. The additives can be mixed with Urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) to form a fluid fertilizer composition. Also disclosed is a method for preparing a flowable additive and an additive comprising a. from about 1.0 to 30 wt. percent solid UFP, and b. from about 99.0 to 70 wt. percent DCD.
