PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fatty acid alkali metal salt-containing composition masking peculiar odor borne by plant oil-and-fat materials even if the composition is in a liquid state, and also imparting high-liking fragrance because of no smell of the masking component itself in use and no excessively intense remaining fragrance after use, and excellent in foaming and quick rinsability when used as a detergent, and to provide a masking method of masking well the peculiar odor of the fatty acid alkali metal salt. SOLUTION: The composition includes: a specific content of a fatty acid salt ((A) component); and at least either one of a specific content of a carbonyl group-bearing compound ((B) component) and a cyclic ether-bearing compound ((C) component); wherein the (A) component is a fatty acid salt obtained by saponifying a 1-2C lower alcohol ester of at least one 8-18C saturated or unsaturated fatty acid with an alkali metal hydroxide.
