PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of producing a carbonyl compound at a high yield using a simple production apparatus, by substituting oxygen in a carbonyl group of a carbonyl compound with heavy oxygen. SOLUTION: The method of producing a carbonyl compound wherein an oxygen atom in a carbonyl group is substituted with a heavy oxygen atom by way of an oxygen/heavy-oxygen exchange reaction, from an aldehyde compound that comprises an aldehyde group and is represented by formula (I) and/or a ketone compound that comprises a ketone group and is represented by formula (II) (an aldehyde compound and a ketone compound are collectively called a carbonyl compound) using water comprised of heavy oxygen as a source of heavy oxygen, is characterized in that the oxygen/heavy-oxygen exchange reaction is carried out, using water comprised of heavy oxygen wherein the enrichment level of heavy oxygen (the ratio of heavy oxygen18O and/or17O in the oxygen atom in water comprised of heavy oxygen) is at least 95 atom%, in the presence of a solid catalyst while dissolving a carbonyl compound and the water comprised of heavy oxygen into a hydrophilic solvent in a manner of forming a uniform solution.
