PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for easily and efficiently extracting a nucleic acid having high quality from brown algae, a method for determining species of the brown algae based on the extracted nucleic acid, and a kit for extracting the nucleic acid from the brown algae. SOLUTION: The method for extracting the nucleic acid from brown algae comprises a step to decompose a viscous polysaccharide of the brown algae using a polysaccharide decomposition enzyme extracted from a marine mollusk, a step to suppress gel-formation of the viscous polysaccharide of the brown algae by using a chelating agent, and a step to extract the nucleic acid of the brown algae by using a proteolytic enzyme. The nucleic acid having high quality is easily and efficiently extracted from the brown algae by using the method for extracting the nucleic acid of the brown algae and the kit for extracting the nucleic acid of the brown algae.
