PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect dirt of a biasing roller disposed opposite to an optical reading unit. SOLUTION: An optical reading apparatus includes a surface side scanner 52 and a back side scanner 53 which are disposed on a carrying path for a check so as to optically read the check to be carried, the biasing roller which is disposed opposite to the scanners so as to bias the check thereto, a reading control portion 91 for controlling the scanners so that the read image is the one formed after the image biased by the biasing roller is added to the outside of the image of the check by allowing the reading range by the scanners to be larger than the size of the check 4, and a dirt detector 92 that detects the dirt adhered to the biasing roller based on the image biased by the biasing roller in the read image.
