A process for the production of steel from pig iron containing phosphorus by blowing pure oxygen on to the bath comprises adding pig iron to a residue left from a previous heat and surface blowing with oxygen until the desired composition is attained, the phosphorus slag being removed before the combustion of carbon is complete and a new slag formed. The residual metal should be not less than 15 per cent of the weight of pig iron to be added and the amount of slag may be increased by the addition of 7 per cent of lime and iron oxide carriers, e.g. iron ore or mill scale. The phosphorus combustion may be controlled so that the amount of phosphorus in the metal when the phosphorus slag is removed has been reduced to 0.1 per cent.
|
