Linear copolymers of ethylene and isobutylene are prepared by polymerization in substantially anhydrous and oxygen free conditions and using a catalyst formed by contacting a halide (other than a fluoride) of a metal of Group IVa, Va or VIa, with a metal, an alloy, an hydride or an organo-metallic compound of aluminium or a Group Ia or II metal, or with a complex hydride or a complex organo-metallic compound of boron and a Group Ia or II metal. The specific catalysts may be as disclosed in Specification 810,023, e.g. aluminium triethyl with titanium tetrachloride. In the example the polymerization is carried out under nitrogen and in diesel oil with ethylene being added continuously. The product is purified and residual catalyst destroyed by treatment with acetone and alcoholic hydrochloric acid.
