A device for producing a W-shaped double fold in a web of material for making bags, the web 1 being drawn off a reel over an inclined flat guide member 2 comprising edges which approach one another in the direction of movement, is characterised in that the guide member 2 at its tapered end terminates in a bent-over tongue 4 which is hollow at the side against which the paper bears, and in prolongation of the central plane of the tongue there are arranged two pressure members, e.g. rollers 8, 9 for the final folding. The cross-section of the cavity of the tongue may be angular, semi-oval or semi-circular and the cavity is slightly widened in conical fashion towards the paper outlet end. Two guide pins 12 are provided on the tongue. A channel 14 extends from the cavity on the tongue and the paper web passes under the channel and over a cooperating spring finger 18 so that the web is given a preliminary fold. Adjustable side guides, e.g. rollers 10, 11 are also provided. The centre fold is continued in the cavity of the tongue 4 and completed by the rollers 8, 9. Instead of a closed guide plate 2 a guide consisting of rails or bars may be used the rails or bars corresponding to the edges of, and the channel 14 in, the plate 2. Further the rollers 10, 11 may be replaced by rails and the rollers 8, 9 by two pressure jaws. |
