PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve convenience by reducing a waiting time for transferring a read image read by an optical reading device to another device to increase the speed of a reading process. SOLUTION: A dot impact printer 10 includes a medium transport mechanism 100 for transporting a medium as a reading object, and this optical reading device 110 arranged in a medium transport path P for optically reading the medium to be transported, wherein one or more regions set in a reading range are read by the optical reading device 110, the read images are stored in a storage section and, when reading of at least one of the regions is ended, the read images stored in the storage section are transmitted to another device even before reading of the other regions is ended.
