PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To end variable display even when some kind of an error occurs when transmitting and receiving a stop pattern specifying command. SOLUTION: In the case that all three stop patterns of one stage among the respective display areas of an upper stage, a middle stage and a lower stage which are units of performing the variable display of symbols can not be received or in the case that the array of the symbols does not match with the array of virtual symbol reels even when two or three stop symbols of one stage are received, the symbol code of the other stop symbol of the stage can not be calculated from the symbol code of one stop symbol. In this case, instead of a non-specified stop symbol or an erroneously specified stop symbol by the stop symbol specifying command, a default symbol stored beforehand in the program ROM of a control board for display is used as the stop symbol. Thus, even when some kind of an error occurs when transmitting and receiving the stop symbol specifying command and the stop symbol can not be normally received, the variable display can be ended.
